Three generations of Ulstrup

The Danish family, Ulstrup has chosen to share an artmoney profile between three generations. Meet them in this interview and learn why.

The Danish family, Ulstrup has chosen to share an artmoney profile between three generations. Grandfather, father and son have made a project out of uploading each their own and also their shared artmoney works to the online gallery.

That way, they use artmoney as an "excuse" to make something that interests three generations alike. Something they can talk about and sit down and enjoy creating together.

On June 22nd, 2018, the three family artists celebrate their collaboration with an opening reception on their art exhibition at the Artmoney Gallery.

Before the exhibition, they dropped by the gallery for an interview ... maybe it can inspire other families to do something similar to nurture their own family relations?

Interview by Lars Christian Kraemmer of the Danish family, Ulstrup

May 28th, 2018

Lars Christian:

How do you feel about starting your artmoney from scratch?

Alfred, 14 years old:

I have always enjoyed drawing and being artistic. I feel fine.

Lars Christian:

Can you tell me a little about yourself?

Alfred, 14 years old:

I go to primary school. In my spare time I play drums and train Taekwondo and play computer games like any other boy of my age.

Lars Christian:

Do you see your father from time to time?

Alfred, 14 years old:

Yes. We make artmoney once in a while and talk about artmoney, but we also do a lot of other things together.

Lars Christian:

Thomas. You are the father to Alfred. Do you want to tell me about yourself?

Thomas, 49 years old:

I am a musician. I have spent a lot of time playing music and teaching music. In my teachers training I also had visual art as a line subject. For many years art has been under prioritized. But now I've been motivated to get started with some imagery again. Partly because we have made this little family team. And now my father has more time to make pictures, so I've been a little inspired.

Lars Christian:

Do you see your father once in a while?

Thomas, 49 years old:

I do. Quite often, I would say. And more often now, that we also make artmoney together. It has become a family project.

Lars Christian:

Anders. You're the father of Thomas. Can you tell me a little about yourself?

Anders, 74 years old:

I have retired from working. I used to teach in visual arts and music to primary school children and at the municipal music school. Since I retired, I have not needed to spend my energy teaching, and it has given the making of art and music a boost. In regards to artmoney, I knew about artmoney long before Thomas introduced it to our family. I thought it was a difficult format to deal with, but at the same time I thought it was artistically challenging. That's why I was positive about it, when we got started. I really enjoy the work of the size limit now.

Lars Christian:

Do you see Alfred once in a while?

Anders, 74 years old:

I see Alfred as much as possible. We enjoy good times together. And this project is just one more thing that we can enjoy together.

Lars Christian:

Alfred. Can you tell me about your entry  into making artmoney?

Alfred, 14 years old:

I am very inspired by what my parents and grandparents do. Also artmoney, but I try to do it in my own way and with my own twists to creation. We sometimes make artmoney together. I really like making artmoney, which is a bit “deep” or has some “secret” behind it. A little mysterious, perhaps.

Lars Christian:

Thomas. How do you work on making your artmoney?

Thomas, 49 years old:

I made some artmoney a long time ago, trying to combine music and a graphic expression. And they stood here in your bookcase for many years. I have gone away from that now, because I think they are two different ways of expression that are a bit difficult to combine. So I've made some linoleum prints of an old farmhouse in the town of Snogebæk. I play with different color combinations and finishes. I am fascinated by how different expressions I can make of the same motif. Also, how much you can stretch it with different methods if you work with water-soluble colors and let it mix and do strange things. So I try to create different moods out of the same motif.

Lars Christian:

Anders. How do you work with your artmoney?

Anders, 74 years old:

The difference between artmoney and the graphics that I previously worked with is, that there is an opportunity to after treatment and collaboration. Both Thomas’s and Alfred's approach to the graphic media is not as conventional as mine. I will regard myself as classically educated with perfectionism about the cutting and coloring. Thomas and Alfred are much more open to further processing and combining their artwork with line or brush or dyeing it or what ever. It makes some exciting results that are new and fresh to me. At the same token, it also gives some kicks that sharpen the critical sense of what may be interesting to look at in the end.
